Newsroom numbers workshop
A half-day with the people who speak in morning conference, practising how to read a week of app figures without borrowing website language.
Figures only change a newsroom when the people in conference share a meaning for them. This workshop is a practice session, not a lecture about ‘digital’. We bring a sample week from your own app — or a redacted week from a similar title if yours cannot be shown — and walk through story, push, paywall, and homepage in the order a news day actually runs.
Who should be in the room
The editor who chairs conference, two or three section heads, and whoever currently emails the numbers. Twelve people is the ceiling; beyond that the room performs and nobody admits they have been quoting the homepage refresh count.
What we practise
How to describe an article open without calling it a ‘hit’. How to say a push failed without blaming the night reporter. How to keep Bahasa and English editions from being mashed into one fake total. The session ends with a one-page crib the chair can keep beside the conference notes.
Practicalities
We travel within Johor, Melaka, and the Klang Valley on the quoted fee. Farther newsrooms add travel at cost. The room needs a table, a way to show a few printed pages, and a rule that laptops stay closed unless we are looking at the app together.
